London’s underground bar scene hides a handful of speakeasies that feel like secret clubs from the 1920s, yet they’re all within a two‑hour walk from the city centre. The first thing you’ll notice is the door: a plain wooden panel, a brass knob, and a faint scent of gin and old paper. Inside, the lighting is low enough to make you feel like you’re in a speakeasy, but the cocktails are modern, the music is curated, and the staff know exactly when to pull the door shut to keep the buzz at a whisper.
Finding the Door
Most London speakeasies hide behind inconspicuous façades. In Soho, a nondescript back alley leads to Hemingway’s Hideout, where a brass keyhole on a brick wall gives you access after you say the password “Eagle.” In Shoreditch, a laundromat’s back door opens to The Backroom, and the staff will only let you in if you can identify the correct vintage TV from the 1970s. The trick is to look for subtle cues: a tiny brass plaque, a discreet doorbell, or a door that appears to be a storage unit. Once you’re inside, the real adventure begins.
Signature Drinks That Tell a Story
These venues pride themselves on cocktails that pay homage to the prohibition era while incorporating local ingredients. At Hemingway’s Hideout, the “London Fog” uses London‑grown lavender gin, a splash of oat milk, and a dusting of black pepper. The recipe was developed by a bartender who once worked at a distillery in Kent. In The Backroom, the “Shoreditch Spritz” blends gin from a micro‑distillery in Essex with elderflower cordial and a twist of lemon, served in a vintage coupe glass. The drinks are not only tasty; they’re also conversation starters because each bottle carries a story of its origin.
Ambience and Design Choices
Interior designers for these bars lean heavily into the 1920s aesthetic but with a modern twist. Low‑profile leather couches, exposed brick walls, and a single chandelier made from reclaimed glass create a cozy yet sophisticated vibe. The lighting is intentionally dim, with a few amber lamps that make the space feel intimate. Music is carefully curated: a mix of jazz standards and contemporary indie tracks with a vintage feel. The result is a place where you can sit for hours without feeling rushed.
Staff and Service Style
Staff members often wear period‑appropriate attire—neckties for men, pearl earrings for women—yet they speak in modern slang. They remember your favourite drink after the first night and will suggest a new twist next time. The service is quick, but the bartenders take time to explain the inspiration behind each cocktail. At Hemingway’s Hideout, a bartender once shared that the “London Fog” was inspired by a rainy evening in May 1924, which adds a layer of authenticity to the experience.
